This page provides a checklist of non-African museums with African
collections or an African focus on the Internet. It has been developed by the
International Committee for Documentation of the International Council of
Museums (ICOM-CIDOC), as background for the
CIDOC Conference in Nairobi, September 1996. There is
also a general introduction to these pages.

- Cambridge, MA: the
Peabody Museum of
Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University, is the oldest museum in the
Americas devoted to archaeology and ethnology. Visitor services are presented in
the Museum of
Cultural and Natural History. The details of the
museum
departments include the archaeological, ethnographic and osteological
collections, with a description of their African holdings. The African
ethnographic collections include over 20,000 objects from three major
ethnographic groups from specific regions: northeastern Liberia, southern

- Charlottesville, Virginia:
Bayly Art Museum,
University of Virginia, includes art from the Mediterranean and Africa. It has
an interactive exhibition catalogue of
African Art: aesthetics and meaning, an exhibition held in 1993.
- Dallas, TX: the Dallas
Museum of Art has major holdings of African art. Brief details are available

- Decatur, GA: the Michael C. Carlos
Museum, Emory University, has details of its
collections. This
includes extensive selections from the Egyptian art and sub-Saharan art

- Detroit, MI: the Detroit
Institute of Arts has a well developed Web service, covering the
galleries and other
services. Description of African,
Oceanic, and New World art collections. A current exhibition covers
African

- Los Angeles, CA: the
Fowler Museum of
Cultural History, UCLA, has a general description, highlights from the
collection, current exhibitions, publications. Further information from the

- Memphis: the University of
Memphis Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology includes an
exhibit.
- New Haven, CT: the Yale
University Art Gallery provides two levels of service, for
graphics and
text-based
users. Under development. Highlights of African gallery are currently being
installed.
- New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art
is one of the largest art museums in the world, with a Web service
providing an overview of the collections in the galleries and visitor services.
This includes a
floorplan of
galleries with brief highlights from the collection, including
art of
Africa, Oceania and the Americas.
- Oberlin, OH: the Allen
Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin University. Includes a few sample images from
the African

- Philadelphia, PA: University
of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology was founded in 1887,
with an emphasis on field excavations and anthropological research. Basic

- Rock Hill, SC: the
Museum of York
County provides basic information about its role and collections, which
focus on mounted African hoofed mammals and smaller animals and birds. Serves as
an example of how a small museum can have a presence on the Web. Details from

- St Louis, Missouri: Missouri
Botanical Garden has a Web service, with information about its
research work
and African botanical
issues, including a checklist of the flora of Gabon and details of the flora
and ethnobotany of Madagascar. Further information from

- Washington, DC: the
National
Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, has a Web service with
details of the collections, Photographic Archive, Library and educational
programmes. The
collections guide has a clickable map showing the layout of the galleries.

- Washington, DC: the
Library of Congress has a resource guide called the
African-American
Mosaic for the Study of Black History and Culture, covering the
