CIMUSET
INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR MUSEUMS AND COLLECTIONS OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

25 - 31 August 2008
Aarhus, Bjerringbro, Copenhagen, Denmark

36th CIMUSET Conference
Theme: ‘Museums and Science Centres in Industrial Society’
The theme of the conference will be “Museums and Science Centres in Industrial Society”, and each day has a theme, that will be introduced by key-note speakers.
1) Technical museums and science centres in society today? How are museums and science centres influenced by society in terms of politics, economics and ideology? What are their functions in society in past present and future? How can sponsoring be developed and integrated into the museums? How can museums attract more and new kind of visitors? What is the future of museums and science centres in the era of communication?
2) Museums and science centres as informal learning sites There is a constant need for new learning places in society where children and adults can develop further knowledge – as life is one long process of learning. Museums and science centres are categorized as informal places of learning outside the classroom where the audience can meet scientists, do their own experiments. How do museums and science centres function as informal learning sites? What are the challenges and perspectives for the future?
3) Museums and environment Museums are often placed in old buildings and in environments with a specific cultural history. Museums often support and deal with plans for preserving old buildings and often the environment of the building is not taken into consideration when planning is done. At the conference buildings and their environments will be in focus. How can the cultural environments and landscapes be documented, selected and preserved along with the buildings?
4) Preserving and presenting Industrial Heritage The year 2007 was appointed the Year of Industrial Cultural Heritage. The conference will be an opportunity to present some of the many projects and events that took place in Denmark in 2007, and allow foreign speakers to present projects, and exhibitions dealing with industry. What are the challenges and possibilities of preserving and presenting industrial heritage at museums and science centres?

CIDOC
INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR DOCUMENTATION

15 - 18 September 2008
Athens, Greece

Venue : Benaki Museum
Theme: The Digital Curation of Cultural Heritage
Digital curation emerged as an important new concept in the theory and management of cultural information. It covers all of the actions needed to maintain digitised and born-digital cultural objects and data, going beyond digital preservation to encompass their utilisation in the context of their entire life cycle, from acquisition and appraisal to exhibition, learning and commercial exploitation.
The focus of CIDOC 2008 on the digital curation of cultural heritage will allow curators, collection managers, documentalists,  archivists and museum information specialists to explore a broad range of theoretical, methodological, professional practice and technological issuers related to the appraisal, digitisation, management, representation, access and use of digital cultural assets, such as those increasingly becoming part of museum information systems and digital archives. A core emphasis of the meeting will be to understand and re-contextualise the know-how and history of established curatorial practice in museums, and memory institutions, in general, in the new field of digital cultural heritage; to review and discuss the applicability of standards- and good practice-related work in the context of managing digital cultural information; and to identify and explore the issues, methods and challenges involved with the development of new genres and contexts of virtual exhibition, e-learning and technology-enhanced services for scholarship and research.

UMAC
INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR UNIVERSITY MUSEUMS AND COLLECTIONS

16 - 20 September 2008
Manchester, United Kingdom

Theme: University Museums and the Community
Venue : The Whitworth Art Gallery

Hosted by: The Manchester Museum and the Whitworth Art Gallery, The University of Manchester, United Kingdom. With the University Museums Group UK
For much of their history, universities were elite learning environments, sheltered from the outside world by their ‘ivory towers’, and taking their model from the monastery. Since at least the 1960s, though, universities have been playing an increasingly important role in their local and regional communities. One of their early roles was to form extra-mural departments which offered courses to members of the public. More recently, universities have begun to recognize their cultural, economic and social role within their communities.
Universities are often major employers; some historic universities play a major role in the tourist economy; and some make a significant contribution through spin-off companies formed as a way of bringing commercial applications to university research.

In addition, one of the major ways in which universities make a contribution to their communities is through their cultural provision.
Many universities operate theatres, concert venues, parks, botanic gardens, and museums and galleries. Increasingly, university museums and galleries have become a vital link between universities and their communities. They are important sources of learning outside the classroom for schools and colleges, as well as places of informal learning for visitors of all kinds; they are vehicles for public engagement with academic research; and increasingly they are becoming places where the university can listen to the community and its views on the issues studied by academics.

The theme of UMAC's 8th International Conference therefore focuses on one of the most pressing issues today for university museums across the globe, which is how they can best act as two-way bridges between the world of the university and the many and varied communities, outside the university, within it in the form of students and staff using the museums in their leisure time, and the global ‘virtual’ community of the Internet.

UMAC members encompass museums of all academic disciplines; each of them will be affected by these transitions in a different way and each will choose a different approach and strategy to secure the museum's mission.

UMAC's Conference Board 2008 invites participants to report on how they
- each in their specific and therefore unique situation - respond to these challenges and to share experiences and best practices.

ICOM-CC
CONSERVATION

22 - 26 September 2008
New Delhi, India

15th triennial Meeting.
Theme: "Diversity in heritage Conservation: Tradition, Innovation and Participation."

Cultural heritage recognizes no boundaries, it belongs to mankind and the responsibility for its preservation rests with all of us. Past few decades have seen many innovations in the field of conservation with varying degrees of success. Despite many successes the challenge is to develop materials and methods that are least expensive, efficient and can withstand the test of time. Traditional methods and materials used in many countries, afford one such possibility. However, proper evaluation and modification may be required in some cases for their successful application in the field of conservation. Thus, tradition, innovation and participation by all in conservation related activities is one of the important strategies, particularly in the context of Asia, in realizing mankind’s goal of safeguarding our heritage for posterity.
